- Sand shall be placed into the excavation in 12–18 inch (305–458 mm) vertical lifts.
- Each lift shall be compacted after placement to at least 60% of the vertical height of the tank.
- In tidal areas, sand may be used only if measures are taken to prevent washout during the service life of the system.

NOTES FOR NATURAL EARTHEN MATERIAL

- If earthen material from the site is used, take a minimum of four 1 cu.ft. samples from different representative locations and sieve to determine compliance.
- Sand or natural earthen material may be used in tidal areas only if measures are taken to prevent washout during the service life of the system.
